Brazil - Flavio's Liberal Party Wins BIG

What happened: Flavio Bolsonaro won 47% of the vote in the first round of Brazil’s presidential elections, guaranteeing a runoff, and his Liberal Party (PL) celebrated a series of electoral victories, ushering in a new era of conservative domination in Congress.

Why it matters: The right-wing PL expanded its delegations in the Chambers of Deputies and the Senate, becoming the largest party in Congress and winning a handful of gubernatorial races.

What happens next: Lula and Flavio meet in the presidential runoff on 25 October while the PL decides who will lead its legislative bloc, which includes many parties of the big center coalition, including the Republicanos, the Brazil Union and the Progressives.

On 4 October, voters marched to the polls and delivered a resounding victory to presidential contender Flavio Bolsonaro and his nationalist-conservative Liberal Party (PL). Flavio’s margin over incumbent President Lula was limited to 2%, forcing a runoff on 25 October, but the PL scooped up a handful of governors’ mansions, a larger plurality in the Chamber of Deputies than in 2022 and the biggest delegation in the Senate.

Although over a dozen parties fragment Congress, if Flavio wins the presidency later this month, he will govern with strong congressional backing.
