On Our Radar: Energy Markets Round-Up

Share newsletter:

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to this week's On Our Radar from Horizon Engage. This edition focuses on elections. Lula's historic win in Brazil and what the outcomes could be from the Israeli elections.

If you would be interested in a briefing note from one of our country experts, please fill in this form.

As Israel goes to the polls today, the election is too close to call, and for investors and operators, the coalition talks that follow will matter more than the vote itself. No poll gives Netanyahu's or Eizenkot's bloc a majority, and small parties may decide who governs. The outcome will set the direction of regulation, energy policy and Israel's foreign relations. A deadlock would leave a caretaker government able to run the state, but not to take strategic decisions.

Two days after polls close, our Israel team will look past the headline numbers to cover:

  • Coalition math: each bloc's realistic path to 61 seats, whether Arab parties become kingmakers, and signposts for a repeat election
  • Energy: whether the Dayan Committee's export framework survives, and what happens to the Fifth Offshore Bid Round and gas diplomacy with Egypt and Jordan
  • Foreign relations: what each outcome means for ties with Washington, a strained relationship with Europe, and the region
  • The bottom line: who leads next, how long a caretaker period could last, and what it means for Israel's investment environment.

Lula Just Made Electoral History

For the first time since 1989, a candidate who came second in the first round has won the presidency. Lula secured 51.8% of the vote in Sunday's runoff, winning by 4.4 million votes.

His fourth term will begin with a difficult Congress, limited fiscal space and a slowing economy. Major reforms will require political compromises, making cooperation with the private sector all the more important.

We expect Lula and VP Geraldo Alckmin to focus on reviving the economy by attracting new investment, particularly greenfield projects in energy, manufacturing and mining.
